The Future of the Internet and Business

The Future of the Internet

It has changed the way we think and revolutionised how we do business. It is arguably the single most important technological development in the history of mankind. Since the middle of the 1990s it has allowed us to communicate almost immediately with others across the globe, led to the development of social media that has helped change the world we live in, and even developed into pocket sized smartphones that allow us to surf and chat on the move.

Higher Speeds and Greater Connectivity

There are those who still remember the old style dial up network that took a while to connect and transmitted a comparatively small amount of data. Nowadays we are used to downloading everything from books, music and HD movies to the complex data and programs contained in games that appear magically on our screens. We can play against people half way across the world because of advances such as cloud technology.

Now we don’t even need wires, with fast Wi-Fi connections we can be in a car, or in a shop and access the internet literally anywhere.

The Internet and Business

The number of start-up businesses has increased dramatically in the last few years. People now have the confidence and the tools to begin working for themselves and the primary mover in this has been the development of the internet. We have passed beyond the dot.com era which has seen the battle of giants, businesses started in garages turned into mega million corporations like Google and Twitter.

There have been failures of course. Who remembers Netscape now? But behind all the big stories, there has been a quiet revolution going on. Internet technology has allowed the growth of outsourcing, something that has benefited new business growth but also made access to high level expertise both viable and affordable to many, not just the lucky few.

Many things could not be achieved if we didn’t now have the internet. Companies who have resourced manufacturers to make products abroad wouldn’t be able to do so without that connection. No business can really afford not to have a presence online anymore. It’s where most of the trade is done, even more so with the ongoing smartphone revolution where people can view and buy on the move.

What’s Next?

We’ve already dipped our toes into the world of augmented reality where you can point your phone at a product and immediately get more information about it. Google are developing their new glasses which means you are connected as you walk along and others are trying to jump onto that particular bandwagon.

Greater connectivity and faster speeds may well mean that our boundaries will shrink ever more, something that was at the philosophical heart of the net’s creators.

It doesn’t all come without worries. Will governments try to take control and decide what we can and can’t access? Will it cause a greater divide between the haves and have-nots or will it educate us to live better lives?

There is no doubt that the internet will continue to have a huge impact on our daily lives and, for many, it will mostly be beneficial.
